Spaugh Dameron Tenny, LLC is partnering with America's Toothfairy to promote its Smile Drive campaign, which was launched in 2014. Volunteers and community organizations collect toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and other oral hygiene products and distribute them to schools and programs that serve at-risk kids. Spaugh Dameron Tenny, LLC recognizes that the lack of basic oral care products in many low-income homes is a cause of tooth decay, so we’re participating in the America’s Toothfairy Smile Drive campaign.
Our firm will collect toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and other oral hygiene products and distribute them to organizations that serve at-risk kids. Our Smile Drive will be held in Charlotte, NC, from March 1st to March 14th. Donated items will be distributed in time for World Oral Health Day on March 20th!
We’ll finish off our Smile Drive by sponsoring Celebration of Smiles, a special event held on March 14th. The event will include a panel of dental industry thought leaders, as well as a networking opportunity for the local dental/medical community. The discussion will focus on how to get involved to help local children, engage your team and highlight your practice in the community by supporting oral health care, education, and resources for children in need.
Spaugh Dameron Tenny is excited to be a part of the Celebration of Smiles by moderating the conversation between this panel of local dental industry thought leaders:
In preparation for America's Toothfairy's event, we are interviewing each of the panelists to get their thoughts on the latest trends in dentistry and how those changes affect children's overall health, as well as, their dental practice's bottom line. This week we're talking to Dr. George Betancourt, an attending faculty member in the Department of Oral Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center.
George A. Betancourt, DMD, FICOI is a general dentist who received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Connecticut. He went on to complete a residency in General Dentistry at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC and served as Chief Resident his final year. In addition, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular and Microbiology from the University of Central Florida. Dr. Betancourt is a Fellow in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He is also the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. He has been voted by his peers as a Charlotte Top Dentist, a list published in Charlotte Magazine, since 2007. He has also received Outstanding Achievement honors from the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Operative Dentistry.
The technological aspects of dentistry have changed the profession dramatically. In particular, the digitized capabilities we now have that impact everything from smile design to the surgical placement of implants. With a simple intraoral 3D scan of your teeth and cone beam CT imaging, within minutes we can develop complex treatment plans that previously required impressions, models, and laboratory work. Most patients are truly shocked, and pleased, to learn about what our technology is capable of.
Regardless of what technology we may have available, successful dentistry remains built upon a preventive approach. Minimizing the impact of dental decay and other oral conditions through education and home care products should be an area of focus for all practitioners. The more we can get the necessary resources in the right hands at an early age, the healthier lives kids will have as a result. Note that I mentioned healthier lives and not just healthier mouths. Evidence will only continue to grow that shows the overall negative impact of on an individual’s well-being when poor oral health exists.
One of the most rewarding aspects of what I do is the relationship that is built with families in the community. To see the different generations of individuals come through, and to be able to provide them with age appropriate care, is such a large part of the personal and professional reward that keeps me going. Whether placing implants, performing restorative treatment, or removing wisdom teeth, family participation in care is fantastic. I get to see the difference I make regularly and appreciate the bonds that are forged with people by being their go to source for all needs dental.
To be honest, word of mouth and referrals from existing patients is still a top priority. Nothing can provide your practice with success and longevity like the reputation you uphold among your existing patients. We strive to treat everyone to the absolute best of our ability. Every time. We recognize the importance of a social media presence and over the years have devoted many resources to being accessible on those platforms. Our website is great and very informative. Reviews are so helpful. We have a system in place to encourage our patients to post reviews. Given our efforts to provide an elite level of care and treatment experience, these reviews are often a huge benefit to first time visitors. We also have a library of videos available that introduce the doctors, the staff and even a variety of patient testimonials. When folks are looking for services such as those as we provide, they have to be able to find us. Once they do, very important information has to be at their finger tips.
The residents I work with are new graduates right out of dental school. The hospital based program provides them with post-doctorate training that further enhances their skills and gives them a higher level of autonomy than what they were accustomed to in dental school. Dentistry can offer so much, it is very important that as a young doctor you discover what your passions are within the profession. You need to continue developing your skill set while understanding more about what you’d like to get out of your professional career. For example, seeking out further education and becoming a specialist. Or, it may be you want to treat families as a general dentist but have an interest in a particular topic such as implants. The list goes on. My advice is to learn enough about the profession and what we can do so that they make the best decisions that will promote the professional satisfaction they would like to achieve. It’s very easy to overlook the importance of that in the earliest stages of your career.
