As the founder of the Spaugh Dameron Tenny, Herbert Spaugh, Jr. had a wealth of wisdom to share with clients. From Air Force pilot to serial entrepreneur to sailboat racer and city councilman, "Herb" experienced it all. Not one to brag; he would have simply told you that he had an "interesting life." Herb brought perspective to every situation, a valuable asset when it came to the myriad financial scenarios he helped clients with over the course of his career.
After serving in the Air Force in the late fifties, Herb entered the insurance field. He started building his client base with the help of friends and family who wanted to support his small enterprise. Through his brother's role as a well-known pediatrician, Herb's reputation in the medical community in Charlotte grew rapidly. Fueled by an innate drive and naturally competitive streak, Herb worked hard to ensure that the business would take off to a strong start. "The best way to grow a business, I've found, is through friendship and referrals," Herb explained. Over the years, Herb's practice continued its upward trajectory, as he became a provider of insurance strategies to several medical practices and Carolinas Medical Center's (now Atrium Health's) residency program.
The son of a highly prominent and respected clergyman, Herb was raised with strong ethical and moral principles that are at the root of Spaugh Dameron Tenny's service philosophy. "I believe in doing the right thing," Herb said. "It's not about what is right for us; it's about what is right for the client." That need for honesty and transparency, always delivered with good humor, allowed him to attract like-minded partners and build a team dedicated to caring for clients. Part of his legacy is helping grow Spaugh Dameron Tenny into a recognized name in financial planning for medical and dental professionals.
